Summer on The Dutch coast - photo diaries

Summer - and especially the holiday season - isn’t my favorite time of year to photograph the coastline. The beaches are usually full of people, noisy, and the beach clubs turn into bustling places filled with music and the smell of fried food.
Not exactly the kind of vibe I’m after.

I tried my best to avoid these places during the day, or to return to them in the early morning - when they were at their calmest and quietest.

After this spring–summer season, I declared myself the king of the back doors of beach shacks.

More than ever before, I’ve spent time to explore the back alleys of places that often look inviting from the front, while their backs are neglected, weather-beaten by wind and sand, with salt-eaten wood falling apart.

It turned out that this is what attracts me to them the most. That this is, in fact, my favourite direction when it comes to photographing the coast at the moment: documenting the corrosion shaped by the forces of salt, wind, and sea - dressed in the vibrant colors of local beach cabins, the quiet poetry in decay.
